16-year-old Luka Mijatovic Shatters Swimming Records: A Rising Star's Triumph
In a remarkable display of talent, 16-year-old Luka Mijatovic has etched his name in swimming history. At the 2026 Speedo Sectionals in Roseville, California, Mijatovic clocked an astonishing 8:32.83 in the 1000 freestyle, surpassing the previous record held by Clark Smith since 2015. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as Mijatovic's time is nearly four seconds faster than his previous personal best set in December.
Mijatovic's recent performances have been nothing short of extraordinary. He broke the 8:40 barrier in November, shattering his own National Age Group record of 8:42.45 from February. In December, he further improved his record to 8:36.71, which was later beaten by his latest feat. These consistent time drops have propelled Mijatovic into the top 5 of all-time 1000 freestyle performers, alongside swimming legends like David Johnston, Erik Vendt, and Ahmed Jaouadi.
What's even more impressive is that Mijatovic joins an elite group of high schoolers who have beaten NCAA records. He is only the second male swimmer to achieve this, following in the footsteps of Michael Phelps, who set a record in the 200 butterfly in 2003. At the Roseville Sectionals, Mijatovic narrowly missed breaking the 15-16 NAG record in the 400 IM, finishing just half a second behind Maximus Williamson's record. However, he did set a new 15-16 NAG record in the 500 freestyle, becoming the third-fastest performer in history.
