The Thai MotoGP: A Tale of Two Races for Franco Morbidelli
The season-opening Thai MotoGP was a rollercoaster ride for Franco Morbidelli, who battled back from a poor start to finish in eighth place. The Italian rider described the race as 'two races' after a slow start and a challenging opening lap.
Despite qualifying on the outside of the third row, Morbidelli struggled early on, losing ground and finishing 14th in the Sprint. The situation worsened on Sunday's grand prix, where he dropped to 19th on the opening lap, even worse than his Sprint start.
Morbidelli's comeback began on lap six, but he was still only 15th at the halfway stage. However, his determination paid off in the closing stages, where he outpaced all Ducati riders except Marc Marquez. The highlight of his recovery was a last-lap pass on factory Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia, securing him an impressive eighth-place finish.
Morbidelli attributed his struggles to a grip issue and the quick consumption of tyres, which affected his performance. Despite the challenges, he praised the team's potential and the positive aspects of the new package. VR46 team manager Pablo Nieto acknowledged the comeback but emphasized the need to improve the opening laps.
The Thai MotoGP holds special significance for Morbidelli, as his mother is Brazilian. His teammate, Fabio di Giannantonio, finished in sixth place, outperforming Marc Marquez's late retirement. With the team's potential and the upcoming race in Brazil, Morbidelli and his team are ready to recharge and continue their journey towards success.
